The surveyors noted excellent commitment from Scripps Health and hospital leadership, ensuring the necessary resources and creating a hospital culture focused on outstanding trauma care. Surveyors from the ACS who evaluated the hospital cited numerous strengths including innovative clinical care guidelines, rapid and high-quality care of the most critical trauma patients, and outstanding collaboration with prehospital EMS providers and the San Diego County trauma system. #Level 1 trauma verification

Scripps Health now has two of the three Level 1 adult trauma centers in San Diego County, with Scripps La Jolla joining Scripps Mercy Hospital San Diego. In addition to the active clinical program, the division supports injury prevention, ongoing research opportunities, and continuing medical education programs such as American College of Surgeon’s: ATLS, ATOM, ASSET, RTTDC, and Stop the Bleed Classes.Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla has been verified as a Level 1 trauma center, the highest designation awarded by the American College of Surgeons (ACS) to indicate the highest range of injury care available to patients. This comprehensive approach to trauma care and surgical critical care provides powerful research and educational opportunities for residents interested in a career in trauma surgery or surgical critical care. The trauma program at Vanderbilt is unique in that surgical residents gain exposure to the problems of both urban and rural trauma care. LifeFlight and the Stallworth Rehabilitation Center allow patients to remain within the Vanderbilt system from the time of injury until their return to work. LifeFlight has 8 helicopters, 1 airplane and 14 ground ambulances which helps provides rapid access to the tertiary care facilities of the Trauma Center for all patients within a 140-mile radius of each base.
With over 3 decades of active service, the LifeFlight helicopters make over 3,000 flights annually.
The Trauma Units' unique geography allows close integration and management of patient progress from admission to discharge. In 2019, trauma unit expanded their footprint to include 17 additional stepdown beds. Within the Trauma Center it includes a 20-bed dedicated burn unit for adults and children, a 31-bed integrated Acute and Sub Acute care unit, which contains an 18-bed ICU unit, a 7-bed Acute Admission Area and a 10-bed Sub-Acute unit, and LifeFlight, an active air medical transport program. The Division of Trauma handles close to 8,000 acute traumas admitting 4,700 of those annually. Vanderbilt University Medical Center’s Level 1 Adult Trauma Center provides trauma care for an 80,000 square mile Regional area.
